"Horizon 2020 - Societal Challenges "
A challenge-based approach will bring together resources and knowledge across different fields, technologies and disciplines, including social sciences and the humanities. This will cover activities from research to market with a new focus on innovation-related activities, such as piloting, demonstration, test-beds, and support for public procurement and market uptake.
Funding focuses on the following challenges:
  • Health, demographic change and wellbeing;
  • Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research, and the Bioeconomy;
  • Secure, clean and efficient energy;
  • Smart, green and integrated transport;
  • Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials;
  • Europe in a changing world - inclusive, innovative and reflective societies;
  • Secure societies - protecting freedom and security of Europe and its citizens.

"Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy"
This Sub-Programme is structured around seven specific objectives and research areas:
  • Reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint
  • Low-cost, low-carbon electricity supply
  • Alternative fuels and mobile energy sources
  • A single, smart European electricity grid
  • New knowledge and technologies
  • Robust decision making and public engagement
  • Market uptake of energy and ICT innovation.
European City Facility (EUCF)
Description of call
"European City Facility (EUCF)"
The European City Facility (EUCF) aims to support municipalities and local authorities in developing Investment Concepts (IC) related to the implementation of actions identified in their climate and energy action plans. The ultimate objective of the EUCF is to build a substantial pipeline of sustainable energy investment projects across municipalities in Europe.
The EUCF finances activities such as (technical) feasibility studies, market analysis, stakeholder analysis, legal, economic and financial analysis, risk analysis, etc. that are required to develop the investment concept.

Overall, each call for applications will be open for two months, except for the first call where the application period has been extended due to Covid-19. The following tentative timeline applies for the EUCF calls for applications:

  • 1st call: 25 May 2020 - 2 October 2020
  • 2nd call: March - April 2021
  • 3rd call: October - November 2021
  • 4th call: May - June 2022
